Japanese camera maker Olympus Optical Co. and Eastman Kodak Co. of the United States will forge an alliance in the single-lens reflex (SLR) digital camera business. The move is aimed at tapping global demand for high-end digital cameras by pooling their technology and sales networks.
Olympus will develop a camera incorporating Kodak's latest image sensor and launch it as early as October. Kodak will obtain technological expertise from the Japanese firm and sell the camera under its own brand next year, it said.
The SLR digital camera to be developed will include an image sensor of about five million pixels. The sensor will be almost 40 percent smaller than those used in current SLR digital cameras, enabling the camera and lenses to be smaller and lighter. The new camera will likely be priced around 850 dollar or 750 euro, much cheaper than other SLR digital cameras currently available.
